According to the UN, there are an estimated 120 million street children in the world. 120 million children who are sleeping alone and cold at night under bridges, in trees, in any hiding place that they can find. There are 120 million children with no one to love them who feel completely forgotten and abandoned in the world. Hope for Street Children believes that street children are a terrible injustice and that no child should ever be on the streets. It is the goal of Hope for Street Children that every street child in Kampala, Uganda should know Christ personally, know that they are loved unconditionally and realize the amazing God-given potential inside of them. Hope for Street Children purchases necklaces from organizations working with disadvantaged children in order to help assist their programs and then uses the proceeds towards ongoing outreach with street children in the Kisenyi and Kivulu slums in Kampala, Uganda. It's about as "fair trade" as possible, too. The money is used in two ways, to take care of children still living on the streets and to help take them home whenever possible, For our street children programs we use the profit of the necklaces to rent rooms for the children to sleep in at night, medicine to treat their wounds, to buy food and hire women to cook for the boys, take children to the hospital when they are really sick and purchase the kids clothing and shoes when they really need it. For our resettlement programs we use the money from the necklaces to take street children who want to be reunited with their families home. We purchase for the children all of their clothing, school supplies, toiletries, linens, and anything that they may need and then accompanied by one or two of the social workers who has been working with that child in the slums we take them home.We also purchase for the child's family a small gift and some chickens or rabbits to keep the child busy and giving them a way to earn some little money and therefore an incentive not to run away again. we also pay for the child's next semester of school fees and try to continue to return and pay the fees each term.
